Materials and Woods and
How We Make Toys
We do not mass-produce toys.
We hand-build every toy we make
for an individual person as a gift for a single, special child.
Each is a one-of-a-kind, personalized,
limited edition toy that we know a specific child will appreciate, play
with endlessly, and cherish forever.
MATERIALS WE USE
To ensure our toys stand up to a lifetime of
rugged use, we use only fine cuts of solid wood --
never plastics, composites, pressed-woods, or veneers! Among
the woods we use are:

Oak

Maranti
-
Mahagony
-
Cherry
-
Birch
-
Douglas fir
-
Maple
-
Cedar
-
White pine
-
Teak, etc..
HOW WE BUILD

First we carefully select an
appropriate combination of woods for each toy.

Then each part is carefully
cut out on a special band saw
-
From there each part is hand
sanded and inspected.
-
Next, all parts are stained
and sealed with special preservatives to protect them against
weather and UV deterioration.

The parts are then tested for
"fit" and drilled for precise "joining".

The next stop is assembly:
Here we hand fasten every part using cabinetry's strongest
joinery techniques and the best glues available. This
process involves hand-laying every glue joint, then screwing,
bolting, and/or cross-doweling parts together -- except for
"kit" orders where we send you the fasteners for home assembly.
(Testing shows our joinery methods are so good that they create
joints *stronger* that the wood itself!)

Once the glue joints have
"set", each toy is personalized with the
initials of the giver and the
child's initials and age.

From there, the toy is fitted
with any suspension or other "use" parts that may be
required.

Finally, the toy is carefully
boxed and shipped...along with a copy of the history of
Grandpa's Toy Shop and a special, frame-able certificate that
indicates where and when the toy was built, the day it was
completed, their name and the name of who gave it to them.
These beautiful, built-to-last
toys are sure to become treasured family heirlooms
that get passed
from one generation to the next...along with many fond memories and
stories of youthful adventures with them! We are as proud to
build them as we think you will be to give them!
